Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is a Platelet Rich Plasma injection?

Tired of taking a cortisone shot to mask the pain? Wouldn’t it be nice to actually heal the injury causing the pain? PRP is a clinical procedure that takes less than one hour to perform and in many cases can be an alternative to surgery. It has been shown to help heal joint, ligament and muscle pain. There is even evidence of bone regeneration.

How Does PRP Work?

We start the procedure by taking a sample of your blood and using a centrifuge to increase the concentration of platelets and associated growth factors. These are the parts of the blood that cause the body to heal itself. A normal vial of blood would have a 6% concentration of platelets. We increase the concentration to 94%. Think of PRP as a procedure that super charges your blood’s ability to heal your body. The PRP is then injected at the site of injury and your body does the rest. Most patients will notice results after one treatment, but it can take several treatments, depending on the injury, for the pain to fully go away. You can get up to 3 treatments in a 6-month period.

Who Can Benefit From PRP?

Anyone dealing with joint, ligament or muscle pain. Most commonly our patients come in suffering from knee, hip, shoulder, arm or foot pain. PRP not only helps reduce and eventually remove the pain, but it actually helps to heal the injury causing the pain—even if it is chronic pain that you have been dealing with for years.

Joint Pain
Torn Tendons
Rotator Cuff Injuries
Achilles Tendonitis
Tennis Elbow
Patellar Tendonitis
Muscle & Ligament Pain
Vampire Facials
Hair Regeneration
Acne Scarring

Will My Insurance Cover PRP?

Insurance still considers PRP an experimental procedure. It was initially introduced in 1987 following an open heart surgery and it continues to be used in orthopedics, sports medicine, ENT, dentistry, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, urology, ophthalmology and sports medicine. It is a cutting edge treatment that has evidence to show it is effective for bone, wound and cartilage healing along with sprains, plantar fasciitis, tendon pain, arthritis, muscle pain and many other musculoskeletal injuries.

Is PRP Safe?

PRP is produced from using your own blood for the procedure, so it is very safe and there is no concern for rejection or disease transmission. Our physician has been specially trained for PRP and can answer any specific concerns you may have about the treatment.
